Lough Arrow Citizen Science Stream Index Training

On the 13th July, members of the Lough Arrow Fish Preservation Association joined Community Water Officer Luke Kenny and a great group of local volunteers for a Citizen Science Stream Index (CSSI) training session on the Unshin River, which flows out of Lough Arrow.

The evening focused on assessing river health through the identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates, small freshwater insects and other invertebrates that act as indicators of water quality. Participants learned the kick sampling technique, how to identify the key indicator species, and the important role our streams play in supporting healthy wild brown trout populations and the wider aquatic ecosystem.

It was particularly encouraging to see plenty of juvenile trout in the river, highlighting the importance of protecting and monitoring these valuable nursery habitats.

There was an excellent turnout, and it was fantastic to see so many people with a genuine interest in the health of Lough Arrow and its tributaries. The enthusiasm shown by everyone involved demonstrates the value of local communities working together to better understand and protect our waterways.

Following the success of the event, volunteers have agreed to carry out Citizen Science Stream Index surveys on a number of streams flowing into Lough Arrow over the coming months. These surveys will help build a better understanding of the condition of our tributaries and contribute valuable information to support the ongoing conservation of this unique wild brown trout fishery.
